Mullivaikkal and the End of the War

In May 2009, during the final phase of the war, the Sri Lankan state's military offensive reached the Vanni region, including the area of Mullivaikkal, which had been declared a "No Fire Zone." Large numbers of Tamil civilians — including women, children, and the elderly — were killed in the final weeks of the conflict, and tens of thousands more were forcibly disappeared.

Each year on 18 May, Eelam Tamils around the world mark Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. IDCTE uses the occasion to renew its call for justice, accountability, and international recognition of what happened at Mullivaikkal. Read our most recent remembrance day statement in our News & Press section.
